One Room Challenge - Week Five - Girls' Shared Bedroom

Hey friends, so it looks like you, me, and my five-week-old bun, broken fingernails, unthreaded eyebrows, untamed edges, faded leggings and paint covered t-shirt have made it to week five of the One Room Challenge. Next week is the big reveal which means these next couple of days will be a mad dash to finish ERRRYTING on time. On top of the One Room Challenge, I also have a research paper and final presentation due for my very last week of graduate school ever (YAY!) AND Jerai is turning seven the day before the ORC reveal so we need to quickly switch our hats from design to party planning.

Anyways, can you believe we waited until week five to start on the custom pieces!? Yeah, I agree. We crazy.

Josh’s dad is an amazing carpenter and is building a custom dresser for the girls’ bedroom, and it’s definitely my fault that we waited this late to start on it. I kept changing my mind because… that’s what I do best. At one point I wanted 8 drawers, then 6, and at another point I wanted to go with a black stain, then I decided to keep it natural, but now I’m back questioning if black would be better. Smh. I’m also not a micro-manager at all and just assume people know what I want and when I want it (not cool Josalyn. not cool), so I failed to communicate with Josh’s dad that the dresser needs to be done in uhhhh a WEEK! Luckily, he’s retired lol and has all thee time. Also he just does amazing work, super-fast, so he feels confident that he’ll have it built before the reveal.

While Josh’s dad started working on the dresser, Josh worked on building toy storage boxes for under the girls’ beds. The beds are pretty low platform beds, so we had to make custom sizes to fit underneath. I love the compartments which allow for even more toy organization (my favorite word). I’m currently on painting and installing hardware duty. I snapped a quick photo of the toy box with the first coat of paint and hardware placed for a visual. I bought these simple white cabinet pulls from IKEA which will hopefully make it easier for the girls to push and pull these from under their beds.

I’m feeling pretty good about every design decision we’ve made for this space. Yes, things have changed, but I’m getting nothing but good vibes and more importantly, the girls love it! In week 1 I thought I wanted to add more color and some sort of molding to the walls, but by week 3 I realized that I needed to KISS (keep it simple stupid). I scaled back and let the wallpaper be the star and the decor have supporting roles. I think the room looks so much better than before and I hope you all will love the transformation just as much as we do!
