One Room Challenge - Week One - Girls' Shared Bedroom
/Uh oh! Guess what day it is? Guess. what. day. it. is? It’s the One Room Challenge (ORC) kick-off and for the FIRST TIME EVER yours truly is joining in on the fun as a guest participant. If you found me through the ORC website, then I’m sure you’re familiar with how the challenge works. But if you’re not familiar, here’s some background: Basically, participants have six weeks to completely redesign a room or space of their choice, and at the end of week 6 we reveal our new and improved made over spaces. Easy enough right?
I know what you’re thinking “Josalyn sweetie, you can’t even finish a room in 6 months, how dare you think you can complete one in 6 weeks!” And you know what Susan?? You are absolutely right! This is why I’m avoiding doing any major construction work and instead will focus all my energy on the redecorating of a room in our house. The room that will be getting the One Room Challenge treatment is our girls’ shared bedroom (Jurnee - age 5, and Jerai - age 6).
Let’s take a look at the room before we cleared everything out, shall we?
The girls have requested separate beds instead of a bunk bed, which okay cool, but this room is super tiny and serves as both their bedroom AND playroom. It’ll be quite a challenge to find creative toy storage solutions.
Oh hey, dust. This fan never gets used, and honestly I don’t know what we’re going to find when we take down the wood. I’m praying there’s no real damage to the ceiling underneath.
It drives me crazy how unsymmetrical this wall looks with the tall dresser here.
Every piece of furniture, toy, stuffed animal, etc. has been cleared out. And we’re currently taking this opportunity to declutter, declutter, and declutter. Those little chic-fil-a and Chuckie Cheese toys … GONE *Justin Timberlake voice*. Anything broke or with missing parts - GONE. My goal is to create a clutter-free and organized space that is completely transformed at the end of Week 6.
Here’s the design plans.
There will be a bit of boho, blush pinks, muted purples, emerald greens, a custom piece or two, closed storage, and some good ol’ fashion personality.
TO DO LIST:
New Light Fixture // The ceiling fan has gots ta go! I’d like to replace it with a boho style light fixture and also maybe add a ceiling medallion because why not?
Texture and Patterns // New rugs, bed linens, and even some velvet fabric will provide loads of soft texture. We’ll also be adding some wallpaper, molding, and doing something unexpected with the closet doors to bring in more patterns and depth.
Black Girl Magic // Because representation matters. I have some really cool artwork from Black artists that I’ll be hanging up in the room. It’s important that I bring in pieces of art that the girls can see themselves in.
Custom Furniture // Josh’s dad is a carpenter (score!) and makes AMAZING furniture pieces. I thought it would be special to incorporate a custom piece from him into the room. Of course, handyman Josh will also be putting his carpentry skills to use with shelving and a toy storage solution.
New Beds // buh-bye Ikea bunk bed. As mentioned earlier the girls want separate beds, so separate beds they shall get.
Paint // I’m currently on the hunt for the perfect shade of pink. Not too bright, not too light, not too pink (if there’s such a thing). I still haven’t decided if I want to do just an accent wall or if I should paint the entire room.
As you can see, no demo or construction happening here for us, but even still, we still have quite the list of things to do and shop for. I’ll be sharing updates here every Thursday. Be sure to also follow along on Instagram for all the behind the scenes.
